America's Got Talent: Premeire Recap

Share

The 5th season of NBC's show America's Got Talent premiered last night with Howie Mandel being the new judge. Here is  a recap of what happened.

The duo (a 9-year-old and a 5-year-old) are first up and impress with their dance routine. Howie says it was his first "wow moment" of the show and thinks they are “adorable”; Piers calls them "very good dancers" for their age and "impressive"; Sharon thinks their name is appropriate because they are the future.

This traditional side show trio say they want to send the audience home with a "giant permanent oh my God face on". Their act includes stapling things to their bodies, fire eating, knives down throats, biting glass and sticking a needle through a cheek. Howie is "fascinated" by them; Piers calls them "repulsively compelling"; Sharon is the only 'no' because she doesn't think it's right for the show.

One man arrives on stage to dance but then opens a suitcase to reveal another man curled up inside. Their routine includes twisting their bodies in a variety of shapes. Piers thinks it was very good until they started bending themselves. Howie tells them not to listen to Piers, joking: "Before I was a judge and I would be sitting on my couch, this is when I would scream, 'Shut up, Piers!'"

The French street performer and father-of-two says that he dances in the street for no money because it's what he loves to do. Despite having no training he impresses the panel with his routine of miming, dancing and acting. Piers says he's never seen anything like it; Sharon says that she wanted him to keep going; Howie calls it "phenomenal" and jokes that he deserves to dance indoors.

Clad in a PVC suit with a mask and whip, the tattoo artist dances to Pussycat Dolls' 'Don't Cha' while painting on two clear canvases. She then combines them on a black surface to reveal a painting of herself. Howie jokes that it is like art-meets-Ikea-meets-men's club; Sharon thinks she is "stunning" and "talented"; Piers calls it a "brilliant" act.

The singer - who spent the last 25 years living in Austria - plays the piano and sings the last chorus of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' while draped in golden robes. Piers says the singing wasn't too bad but he "murdered" the keyboard. However Howie wants to see more and Sharon thinks he is "quite fabulous".

The 58-year-old from India gets laughs from Howie and Sharon for his impersonations of celebrities including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood and Marlon Brando. Piers thinks it's lucky he told them who he was impersonating or they wouldn't be able to tell, but Howie calls it "hysterical" and Sharon thanks him for keeping them entertained.

Comprised of formerly homeless sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines, the singing group earn a standing ovation with their rendition of 'Old Man River'. Sharon says it is "really emotional" and they are great singers; Howie thinks they are inspirational: Piers says it was "one of the most powerful, emotional, inspiring things" they have ever seen on the show.

The 30-year-old singer says that his grandparents stopped social services taking him into a home when he was young, and he wants to succeed to help them. Piers thinks he has a lot of talent; Sharon says he has a "soulful" voice; Howie agrees that he "really does have talent" and says next time he should step up his performance.

Other acts that make it through to the next round include cheerleading squad Cheer SF, musicians/dancers Danyavaad And The Shimmy Sisters, acrobats Michael Lipari and Ashleigh Dejon, martial artists Kung Fu Heroes, Bollywood dancers Moma Sampath Dance Company and teen rock band Dead Off Center
